Thank you to Lannis and Fay from rural Virginia, USA, for pointing out incorrect directions on this walk. The directions have now been corrected. They were touring Kent and East Sussex by antique motorcycle and staying about a mile from the "Boughton Street" walk. They said: - The walk was very enjoyable and it was a perfect day out for us . As we walked across the long meadow, we had pheasants flush out from almost under our feet, twice! The Rose and Crown was exactly as advertised, old-fashioned and pleasant, with a fantastic chicken-and-leek pie. Just the place for taking a break in the middle of a hot day. We were awed as we walked up on St Mary's Church, founded 1054!! Hard to imagine anything that old. It was interesting walking through the working berry farms and orchards and chatting with the occasional strawberry picker. |

| Walk Information The countryside on this walk is an attractive mix of Orchard, Hop garden and Woodland making this a walk for Spring, Summer and Autumn. Historic Perry Wood hides a wealth of footpaths, the old Shottenden Mill, an Iron age earthworks and the 'Pulpit' with its view of the neighbouring villages. Full of rhododendrons, foxgloves and bluebells it is a joy to walk through and spot squirrels, birds and rabbits. There is also a trail for the blind and disabled. The trees are mainly chestnut, beech and oak which burn with colour in the Autumn, against the evergreen of the conifers and Scots Pine. |
| Rose & Crown Local hops garland the ceilings of the attractively beamed bar. Black and white photographs show the pub and woods in bygone days . Inglenook fireplaces in the bar either crackle with logs in the winter or overflow with one of the lovely flower displays that adorn the mellow interior of this 16th century Free house. A Bat and Trap pitch, the traditional pub game of Kent, shares the lovely garden with an aviary and a children's play area. Picnic tables allow you to enjoy your drinks or lunch surrounded by the scents of honeysuckle, old roses, delphiniums and a blaze of cottage garden plants. Dogs on leads are welcome Lunch time food = 12 noon to 2 p.m. Very popular on summer weekends. Tel:- 01227 752214 |
